| Customer Reviews: A wonderful excursion beyond conventional boundaries July 1, 2010 R. Myhr (Ashburn, Ontario Canada) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I love this recording. It's a work of genius, without pretension, melodic, rhythmic entertaining and wise.
I came late to Natalie Merchant. Although I was vaguely aware of 10,000 Maniacs I never really paid attention; my first of her CDs was House Carpenter's Daughter, a reworking of traditional folk song. I've since bought the catalog, but nothing has given me the pleasure of Leave Your Sleep.
My impression of this recording is of an artist at the peak of her powers, newly experiencing life through her child, crafting a response to that new experience that draws confidently on her intrinsic talent and years of experience. Word-play abounds, wisdom illuminates.
One of my favorite titles is the last song on the first disk, The Blind Men and the Elephant. This is an old folk theme, illustrating the truth that we all have access to part of the truth, but only part -- witty and wise, and wonderfully sung, and the instrumental rave-up at the end is a delight (winds and horns mainly).
It's just great that Ms. Merchant has not felt constrained by those of her fans who would have her repeat herself endlessly. Being challenged is good, and I can only hope that her fans are up to this particularly tasty challenge.
wonderful combination of music and words June 25, 2010 D. Campbell (Saskatoon, Saskatchewan Canada) Some fans of Natalie Merchant's earlier music (with 10,000 Maniacs and as a solo artist) have complained that "Leave Your Sleep" is very different from her other work. It is, but it has the same uncompromising artistic vision that she's always had. I think that if you're truly a fan of someone's music, as I am with Natalie Merchant's, you should accept or at least be patient and open-minded when that artist explores new aspects of their art--as long as it's of high quality, of course. "Leave Your Sleep" is of very high quality, especially as a combination of excellent music and words. The variety of musical genres is impressive, as are Merchant's voice and the literary sources that she chose to provide lyrics for her compositions. The 80-page hard-bound book(let) that is included with the two-CD version of "Leave Your Sleep" is also something to be treasured, both visually and because of the fascinating biographical details about well-known and obscure (but talented) authors.
This was truly a labour of love for Merchant. I'm glad she worked so hard at it!
Brilliant! May 21, 2010 Second Wind (Torrington, CT) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
This is a brilliant and beautiful work. The accompanying booklet alone is worth the price. This is a quote from the introduction; "This collection of songs represents parts of a long conversation I've had with my daughter during the first six years of her life. ...I tried to show her that speech could be the most delightful toy in her possession and that her mother tongue is rich with musical rhythms and rhymes. I gave her parables with lessons in human nature and bits of nonsense to challenge the natural order of things and sharpen her wit. ... I used music to enter these poems, and once inside I was able to understand how they were constructed with layers of feeling and meaning."
If you have children, if you know children or if you were ever a child yourself - add this to your collection.
"Poets are keepers of the sacred language that describes our holy places - unknown and unknowable." I have always been a Natalie Merchant fan - now I am an also an admirer.
leaves me cold May 3, 2010 Diana Henry (Montreal, Canada) 4 out of 9 found this review helpful
I am a huge Natalie Merchant fan. In fact , I went to hear her in concert one night, and my car was towed during the concert, and I really didn't care, I was on such a high from her evening...That being said, this CD is odd, Nursery rhymes and old poetry to music. I highly suggest sampling the tracks before buying, or you might be hugely dissapointed.
