5 out of 5 stars Controversy   April 3, 2010
David Oancia (Welland, ON)

Don't understand why there is so much controversy behind this band. It's been funny to see how passions are stirred as soon as the laser hits. Fact is that Contra is smart, elegant, literary pop. It's both catchy as hell, sunny as a spring day, and thought provoking.

All I hope is that other bands which have mixed cultures get their props as well. There's literally been a plethora of bands from Latin America (Fabulosos Cadillacs, Maldita Vecindad), Brazil (Caetano Veloso, Lenine, Jorge Ben, Orchestra Contemporanea de Olinda) and Southern Europe (Manu Chao, Dusminguet, Amparo Sanchez) which have mixed African, Latin, Ska, and North American pop to great effect. Not forgetting to mention loads of African pop - from South Africa to Morocco - that have been doing the same for over half a century

After all, cultural appropriation is the heart of music. And America is no different.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best emerging groups   March 17, 2010

Donovan meets Animal Collective. Vampire Weekend is definately one of the emerging bands whose success it'll be worth following. Perfect for a sunny day spring walk!
